When winter comes, there are two things you should do; either stay indoors and kill time until summer comes to hike or get out and hit the iced mountains and snowy woods.

Hiking in the winter is not the hardest or the most impossible to do; with the right knowledge and gear, you won’t have issues going out into the woods in the cold.

Here are tips to keep you warm and have an enjoyable hiking experience in winter.

Check the weather

Although it will always be freezing in the winter, you should still be aware of the weather conditions each day to help you select a good day to go hiking. Conditions change in the blink of an eye, and even if you know what the weather will be like tomorrow, re-check before leaving for the trail.

Hike in the day

Go out early and select a trail that you can finish in the daytime. There are shorter days during winter, so plan accordingly. Try to hike in the sun since it will be warm, and on the breezy days, go hiking in places not close to the top of the mountains.

Layer up

You need to wear layers if you will be hiking in the winter. You should wear a base layer like a body hug clothe, middle and outer layers. Always pack an extra layer in your backpack in case you need it. You also need to protect your feet; wear hiking socks made from merino wool or polyester; they are moisture-wicking materials that will help keep you warm.

Your boots should be fitted, waterproof, and suitable for the terrain you will be walking on. Additional items you will need are gloves for winter and boot gaiters to help dry your pants while walking in the snow. Lastly, wear colorful clothing to maintain visibility on the trails, making it easier to locate you in an emergency.

Drink enough water

Even when you are hiking in the cold weather, you need to drink enough water. Regardless of the cold weather, your activities will make you burn energy and sweat. Go for a thermos bottle because that will make the water from freezing. You can also make some hot tea for the journey; put it in a thermos to keep it warm.

Consume high-energy foods

Winter hiking gives you the chance to take in those calories you feel scared to consume normally. You lose more calories trying to keep warm, so you have to eat up constantly. However, keep the foods simple. Take foods like sandwiches, energy bars, and other easy-to-eat foods.

Take a first aid kit for minor injuries and accidents, and know the symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia to let you recognize them if you begin to exhibit any similar symptoms. Lastly, keep someone aware of your movements.

Winter hiking can be really exciting and peaceful. Yes, it can be freezing, but you just need to be prepared; you will have the best experience with adequate preparation.
